Education - Intensive Japanese Language Program

Support for Japanese Language Learning on Yamaguchi University, Tokiwa Campus.

1. Japanese language courses for international students offered on the Tokiwa Campus

We offer the following Japanese courses each semester. Courses begin in April and October, and the schedule for each semester will be available a few weeks before the courses start.

1.1 Japanese Language Courses as foreign language subjects of general education'

From the upper-basic level to advanced level; four courses at all each semester. Undergraduate international students can take these subjects as foreign language subjects of general education and earn credits towards their graduation.

1.2 Timetable of Japanese Courses:

* The class will be given in Seminar Room 1, which is on the 1st F, West side of the Main Bldg. But it may be changed according to the number of the students.

1.3 Japanese for Engineering Course

Advanced level; one course per semester; this subject is to provide useful techniques and knowledge of Japanese language to study engineering and to write academic paper in Japanese. It is possible for undergraduate students to earn credits as a major subject.

* About the subjects written above, the exchange students from partner institutions can earn credits also.

* Most of the classes will be given in Seminar Room 1, which is on the 1st F, West side of the Main Bldg. But it may be changed according to the number of the students.

1.4 Basic Japanese Course

Basic level; five subjects a week for fifteen weeks: JapaneseⅠ, JapaneseⅠ Extra, JapaneseⅡ, JapaneseⅡ Extra, and JapaneseⅢ Extra. "Extra" class is a non-credit course. This course will guide the students through the early stages of Japanese language acquisition, up to the lower basic level.

  • JapaneseⅠ, JapaneseⅠ Extra: For absolute beginners. The class starts with Japanese characters (hiragana, katakana). They are encouraged to take both [JapaneseⅠ] and [JapaneseⅠ Extra] as a set.
  • JapaneseⅡ, JapaneseⅡ Extra: For those who have completed JapaneseⅠ and are familiar with basic grammatical rules, such as te-form, past form, and short form. They are encouraged to take both [JapaneseⅡ] and [JapaneseⅡExtra] as a set.
  • JapaneseⅢ Extra: For those who have completed all the basic grammatical rules and have basic knowledge of keigo.

2. Placement test 'J-CAT' - in order to know your appropriate course-

  • In order to learn which course is suitable for you, students are strongly recommended to take the on-line placement test, J-CAT (Japanese Computerized Adaptive Test) each semester before attending the course, regardless of the necessity of credits.
  • If you cannot take this test on the date designated, please contact the International Student Center to receive the appropriate directions.

4. Some extramural courses by volunteer groups of local residents

In addition to the university courses, there are some extramural courses organized by volunteer groups of local residents in Ube-city. Please join these volunteer classes as much as possible and get acquainted with many Japanese people.

5. Extracurricular activities offered by the International Student Center

5.1 Experiencing Japanese Traditions for International Students

The International Student Center organizes the "Tea Ceremony Lessons" and "Calligraphy Lessons" as an extracurricular activity in each semester. If you are interested in this part of traditional Japanese culture, please do not miss the opportunity to experience it.

Generally, the first lessons start in end of June. The schedule and applications are available a few weeks before the first lesson. If you are interested, please check the notice boards or on web.
